چکیده

In the subsequent 20 years as the garden’s director, Maiden seized every opportunity to improve the herbarium. Even internationally destructive events such as World War I provided unexpected additions: one soldier alone donated 300 specimens from Palestine. And a further parcel from Kew revealed 58 acacia and 23 eucalypt specimens collected between 1816 and 1839. Maiden was also occupied by several enormous scholarly projects: there was work on acacias, a project on the country’s earliest botanical collectors, a forest flora for New South Wales and a complete critical revision of the genus Eucalyptus. Eucalypts fascinated him. He once described them as ‘wild, untamed things, like the native bears and opossums which frequent their branches’. After his retirement, Maiden continued corresponding, working on eucalypts, and writing articles. But within a decade of his death in 1925, a combination of economic depression and waning interest in taxonomy led to a decline in the status of the herbarium. But later years saw something of a revival which this book hopes firmly to cement.

Intraspecific phylogeography of the Japanese threadfin bream, Nemipterus japonicus (Perciformes: Nemipteridae), from the Persian Gulf and Indo-West Pacific: a preliminary study based on mitochondrial DNA sequence

The Japanese threadfin bream, Nemipterus japonicus, the most abundant and crucially economic Nemipterus species is widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific. The species has been studied widely for various aspects but genetic studies are scanty. This preliminary study contributes to the species phylogeography through the study of the genetic diversity and historical demography of N. japonicus...

ROWLEY REVIEW Phylogeography: its development and impact in Australo-Papuan ornithology with special reference to paraphyly in Australian birds

With examples from Australo-Papuan ornithology, we examine the technical and theoretical roots of molecular phylogeography and review its development. We describe the progression from ad hoc interpretation of gene trees in single species phylogeographic studies through to comparative phylogeography and currently advocated model-testing approaches. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences have provid...

Reticulation, divergence, and the phylogeography-phylogenetics continuum.

Phylogeography, and its extensions into comparative phylogeography, have their roots in the layering of gene trees across geography, a paradigm that was greatly facilitated by the nonrecombining, fast evolution provided by animal mtDNA. As phylogeography moves into the era of next-generation sequencing, the specter of reticulation at several levels-within loci and genomes in the form of recombi...

Phylogeographic Triangulation: Using Predator-Prey-Parasite Interactions to Infer Population History from Partial Genetic Information

Phylogeographic studies, which infer population history and dispersal movements from intra-specific spatial genetic variation, require expensive and time-consuming analyses that are not always feasible, especially in the case of rare or endangered species. On the other hand, comparative phylogeography of species involved in close biotic interactions may show congruent patterns depending on the ...

The history and purview of phylogeography: a personal reflection

Last year marked the 10th anniversary of the birth of phylogeography as a formal discipline. However, the field’s gestation began in the mid-1970s with the introduction of mitochondrial (mt) DNA analyses to population genetics, and to the profound shift toward genealogical thought at the intraspecific level (now formalized as coalescent theory) that these methods prompted. This paper traces the...
